well, i've met my second lovely perth-ian in a week.
his name is mike. he's a photographer.
well, studying at least.
he doesn't like flying.
or sailing.
but he does like the train.
especially the lounge carriage, which he intends to own one day. maybe.
it was a pretty random night really. beth, renee,
mike and i went for a counter meal at beth's new local. she's
just moved you see, so it was time to explore the neighbourhood and see
if we could uncover it's hidden wonders.
the bar was a bit so-so.. but on the way home, the fun began.
we found a strangely lit room, mostly empty apart from a lizard in a
glass box, a bookcase full of books, a small air hockey table, and a
table soccer game. we stuck our faces up against the window and
peered in for a while, drooling over the game tables. i blame it
on the beers over dinner, but in a slightly lively state, mike and i
could contain our drool no longer and decided it was time to find a way
in to this mysterious room.
we got to a set of glass doors, half filled by posters of things to
see and do in adelaide. to our surprise, a gentle turn of the
handles clicked the lock, and the doors opened up. we called the
girls over, and tiptoed in.
as we entered the lobby, we could see the hallway that lead to the lounge, and without much thought wandered down.
the games room was well lit by soft warm lighting, it was such a beautiful space. we were in!
let the games begin. :)
i had a strange sense of deja vu, air hockey, with someone from perth.. weird.
anyway, four long games later, and it was time to go.
back along the corridor, out the door, and back home.
well not quite straight home.. we made a quick detour to the local
video store, where we decided to further explore our evening joy with a
film called happiness.
it was an obvious choice, but a little strange and uncomfortable.. old
person sex, kiddy rape scene, murderous fat lady-next-door who chopped
up her victims into little plastic bags.. but amongst the ickiness, it
was still a lovely expression of the irony and agony of our common goal
in life: to be happy!
a fitting end to a strange evening.
indeed.
night.

ps_ for those overseas peeps, perth is a city in australia on the
west side.. a long way from adelaide (my home city), but similar in
many ways. :)
