its funny what a night of wonderful aged scotch, good friends and music can do.

as i type, i lay here in my little apartment. my warm doona wrapped firmly around me, staving off the darkness and cold of an adelaide winter.

my thoughts are consumed with loneliness tonight.

its amazing what a little heart gets used to after a night of closeness.

she stayed over last night. the beautiful girl and travel partner i've chosen to spend the next large portion of my life with.

but our bodies really aren't quite used to sleeping next to each other yet.

mine riles with desire to be entangled, hers tosses and turns with dreams as she talks to her imagination in her sleep.

the morning brings an amazing peace.

sunlight leaks through the space at the top of my curtains.

my eyes slowly open, hazy, blurred.

i see her silhouette throb with her gentle heart beat.

and then as more light steals space in our bedroom it happens.

she wriggles close to me, makes a soft squeak, and her big brown eyes freeze time.

i live for that moment.

tonight my bed is empty.

the crisp night air chilling my throat.

she's asleep in her own bed.

dreaming her own thoughts.

stirring her sheets as she talks to nobody.

i find it slightly difficult seeing so little of her during the working week.

i know its healthy to desire someone so.

i know its healthy to lead our separate lives.

but i also know the hunger of my heart.

the growing wish to be with her more.

so i think of different things.

i think of tomorrows many exhibitions that will be littering vintage clothes shops, gallery spaces & art centres.

i dream of vegetarian pizza.

of thick creamy guinness.

and the drive home, through the frost, to my beautiful little apartment.

to another weekend.

i love you.

i miss you.

life's little simplicities_

its a strange old world out there.

we're all rushing around, getting more and more efficient at things. this. that. everything.

we take great pride in working hard, in producing great work, in looking for the next big adventure.

i made a new years resolution to myself.

to start saying no, even when offers are seemingly wonderful.

just to say no for me.

for the selfish beauty of free time.

free time to sit on my couch, to sit and read, to sit and listen, to watch the rain pepper down all around me.

to spend time with friends.

to drink wine and talk about our understanding of string theory.

to eat chocolate and whisper sweet nothings to loved ones.

i haven't exactly entirely managed to stick to my brash resolution.

i've said yes to more things than last year, more little projects, more fun times.

so you'd think about now i'd be up to my neck, stressed and fidgety, fighting for freedom from the shackles of a self-imposed year of workaholism.

well yes, but no.

no?

i've found a little solution to stress and over-work.

that's to get no by saying yes.

saying yes to life's little simplicities.

i think i owe it all to a certain young beauty that's recently stepped into my life.

she works very hard, long hours, and often probono work.

so how do two young workaholics survive and not get eaten alive?

saturday mornings.

late sunday afternoons.

friday nights.

wednesday lunchtimes.

and occasionally monday evenings.

we share little moments, even 5 minutes at a time.

wading cross town to lock eyes.

brush cheeks.

and disappear.

meeting on street corners, heading opposite directions.

to interlock hands.

tickle.

bump.

giggle.

we do nothing.

which seems like everything.

the wind speaks more logic in a salty sea breeze.

but the little simplicities continue.

and before time catches up.

i see the present.

she sees me.

and we're completely free.

chasing little glimpses of dreams_

dear vox,

i usually only come to you in times of need, when i have to get large mountains of blog off my back.

this time for a change i thought i'd write to you to tell you that things are starting to look rather good.

my day job is quite busily satisfying ( newint.com.au ), my night job is building very nicely ( home-slice.net ), and even my hobbies are going from strength to strength ( ex-a-sketch.com ) with three, yes 3 zines released to date.

plus, i've just been to the music festival of my life, yes, favourite EVER ( lanewayfestival.com.au ), which is quite a big call.. but if you ever get the chance to see bridezilla, then jump at the chance! their myspace doesn't come close to their live show.. but at least it gives you a taste.

and if that wasn't enough, it's fringe festival time here ( adelaidefringe.com.au ).

but what would all this fun stuff be without beautiful people inside and out to share it with? this is where my super awesome bunch of friends come in. they've been there to pick me up from my lows, and now they're here to enjoy the smiles with me. cheers peeps, you know who you are. special mention must go to a new person in my life. she's managed to make my cheeks hurt more often than not. no mean feat for a boy that smiles constantly.

so that's where i stand right now.

my puddle of simple beauty_

things i've noticed in my little puddle of simple beauty lately:

* sleep and relaxation really does seem to clean my head space

* washing the dishes is one of the most therapeutic tasks of my week

* i love vinyl cutters (i just bought a lovely rabbit HX 720 cutter!)

* admitting to things i don't like doing and places i don't want to be really is quite liberating

* my friends are quite possibly my most valuable possession

* feeling lost is my favourite feeling in the world

where oh where has little sighmon been?

hello there, fancy seeing you here.
well it's been a while.
yes, i've been a bad vox friend.
sorry!
but things have just been a bit crazy lately.. crazy in a good way.
i've been taking on lots of projects and getting creative in not only my work time, but also my home time. maybe i've been taking on too much, but hey, is too much ever really enough i ask you?

indigenous art project_

indigenous art project_
a couple of months ago i was invited to take part in an indigenous art reconciliation project for the flinders medical centre 'arts in health' department. it involves me (a graphic designer) working with two indigenous artists and two white australian artists on one combined artwork 4 metres by 2 metres. after painting up the work, i also get to re-develop the artwork on computer with each of the artists to produce 4 separate artworks to accompany the main work. it's been really exciting working with the aboriginal artists, and seeing how wonderfully all of us work together to make the artwork really shine. the timing couldn't be better either, given the current government policy goings on right now. it's been really interesting hearing their opinions on the situation, in that they think the whole policy change has been brought in too quickly and done as a political stunt rather than trying to fix the situation, a situation that they've caused over the past decade or so.

the drawing nights at the pub that i've been organising every tuesday night from 6.30pm have been getting more and more popular. we've been building cardboard creatures, painting box walls, and now we're making a magazine! so stay tuned in the coming week and a bit for your chance to get your hands on a copy. it'll be showcasing lots of talented sketcherers work. :)

youth planner 2009_
i realise 2009 is a long way away, but there needs to be a long lead time for this one, because it's being printed in 4 languages all around the world!
so what is it? it's a diary showcasing the artwork of youth all around the world, from Brazil to Israel, Iran to Kenya and everywhere in between.
do you have some drawings, illustrations, paintings, photos or other artwork you'd like the world to see? the theme is for a sustainable world, one where human rights, social justice and equality are things that we strive for. a place where we respect our environment, and help street kids and underprivileged get more equal status.

i'm also working on helping the global education centre, a teachers recourse centre, redevelop their website so that they can sell and or lend their books online. they're a lovely bunch, so go and visit their old site in the meantime and say hi.

then once i've finished that site, i'm getting onto helping a friend develop his music recording studio. they've turned an old church into a recording studio, and it looks absolutely amazing and sounds great! but their website doesn't show off the beauty and quality of their service. so i'm giving them a hand with that.

aside from all that, my usual job is going along nicely, and i keep meeting wonderful people here in adelaide. so things couldn't be better!

why i love adelaide and goodbye for the weekend_

adelaide is being quite lovely this year.
don't get me wrong, it kicked ass last year too.
but i'm pretty sure that it really has outdone itself. pretty sure.

last weekend was almost definitely my best birthday ever. (even better than my 21st when i turned up in full makeup and wearing a fishnet top) why? my friends.
my friends are fantastic. particularly my new friends, but also ye ol faithful, that stick by my side no matter what controversy and no good i get up to.

so what happens when the mid-week comedown strikes after a weekend of bliss?

yes, that's right, i swallowed my anti-commercial pride and went along to see the king of funk-pop-soul himself.. and let me tell you, he rocks harder than anyone i've seen rock before.

they had me from the second the lights went up when they jogged onto the stage.. dressed in old 80's tennis porn, the big black boy brought his orchestra (including super-uber-hot electric cello playing princess), back up singers, and whole host of musicians and beat makers. it was freeking nuts. add to this the slightly drunken state that i found myself in after trying one of those new black smurnoff double thingies with doody, and i was quite literally smiling from ear to ear.

somewhere between break dancing and stalker stare drool i realised, i really like gnarls.

so you think my week has highlighted already? think again my fine feathered friend.. for tomorrow i fly into sydney to meet my lovely darling sister.. and then.. AND THEN!!!!! we hire off-road motorbikes and tour through the dirt tracks of the blue mountains!!! we'll explore the hidden caves along the way, splash in mud, drink fine wine, eat chocolate and generally catch up and reflect on the tough year she's endured and the fun times ahead.

i can't wait.

ps_ my basketball team "carefactor" had a surprise upset win over "the spurs" last tuesday, so if you're in adelaide and looking for something to do next tuesday the 10th of April, then swing on over to Unley High School Sports for All basketball stadium and cheers us on! game starts at 8pm, and there's a prize for best dressed supporter! :)
